As entrepreneurs, how many times have you wished that every single person in your organisation is as kicked about your vision as you are? It has happened with everyone of us, at least once. Making high stakes decisions is tough. Getting the team to persevere doesn’t come easy. Such challenges are what an effective leader takes up with an open mind and open arms. While it is almost too ideal to have your people share your level of enthusiasm, a few key leadership lessons in the area can go a long way in implementing the positive changes you want to see.

Getting your employees passionate about your cause is exactly the problem we went in to solve at the latest edition of Nudge Talks 2021. In what was a highly engaging and participative workshop, highly acclaimed coaches, N.K.Venkat Narayanan (Bobby) and N.Venkatraman (Tram) from 3C Coaching and Consulting shared their expertise and experiences on the topic. For those of you who couldn’t join us, here are five takeaways from the talk:

change won’t happen. So, accept how motivated and dedicated your employees are towards the vision you all share. The journey of entrepreneurial growth begins with acceptance. Eventually, change will seem easier to implement because you’ll know where you began from and where you’re headed towards.

Unsure of your strengths? Observe the compliments you receive

Not all of us are self-reflective all the time. But if you keep note of the compliments you receive at work, you’ll be able to configure your strengths. The finance team may call you a smart statistician. HR folks could value your soft approach to negotiating conflicts. The tele-calling interns might consider you their sales guru, don’t forget them. From top to bottom, give equal weight to all compliments and figure out your strengths.

When you communicate your vision to your people, be ‘human’

There’s nothing that turns people off more than the fact that they are being “talked at” than “talked to”. The level of compassion you bring to a conversation is proportional to the level of drive you invite from the team. Effective leadership is not about giving commands. It is about gauging the situation and responding accordingly. Oftentimes, this boils down to bringing in empathy before graphs and a slight touch on arm after someone delivers a good presentation.

Take feedback from your employees but remain loyal to your ‘non-negotiable’ values

Feedback is the backbone of any business, be it product based or service based. Because if you don’t take feedback, course correction gets tough and in the long run, your efforts stop getting you returns. Keeping this in mind, always encourage your people to speak. Go one step further to make the feedback anonymous. This’ll build trust and allow people to let go of the hesitation to speak up, especially when there’s a difference in opinions. And, always make sure everyone’s in line with your non-negotiable values and ethics. If a team’s vision is aligned, it is only a matter of time for results to show up.

Start each day with a commitment towards growing closer to your life’s purpose

Last but not the least, this is an integral thing to always ensure. First, know your life’s purpose and goal. What got you started with entrepreneurship? Remember that defining moment when you decided to pursue this path. And keep on telling yourself what your ”why” is - every day, every week, every month. Soon enough, your energy will connect with those around you and will strengthen their “why” as well. Being committed is not a short term project. It is what you practice diligently and regularly. Follow your bliss and let the magic spill over within your organisation.
