Clearing the hurdles to online learning
27 October 2020 — Written by Raaji Naveen
The internet is teeming with articles on how online educational experiences have been frustrating and unfulfilling for all stakeholders. I constantly run into write-ups that showcase how learners feel disengaged from theonline learning experience. There is an abundance of articles about how teachers feel overworked because of working online and how online learning is not effective at all. Of course, in addition to that are the horror stories where learners boot out their teachers and peers from online sessions!
All the above issues are discussed exclusively under the umbrella of challenges faced by online education. I strongly disagree.
All that online education has done recently is bringing the skeleton out of the closet for everyone to see. The inadequacies we experience in online learning platforms are a mere reflection of our existing failures to cultivate a meaningful relationship with learners in the classrooms and adapt to the timely changes in the teaching-learning practices. Likewise, organizations which lack a rich culture of empathy and care where every voice matters, are bound to struggle in unprecedented times. You won’t be surprised that while one may wear the tech hat to solve the challenges of online education- what is worth wearing is the right mindset and attitude hat.
